I’ll admit, I was extremely skeptical about buying a “no name” lift as I have worked in a shop for a few years and been using lifts professionally for over 6 years. As much as I wanted a rotary, challenger, bendpak etc…, I couldn’t justify the cost for my weekend warrior projects/storage for the Midwest winters.
After reading lots of mixed reviews, the consensus still leaned more positive vs negative and I said screw it and pulled the trigger.
Let me tell you- I have no regrets about this lift. The only thing that appears to have been sacrificed from a higher priced lift is the single point unlocking system, maybe slightly higher quality powder coat and that’s really about it….. I knew that this lift wasn’t equipped with the single point unlock but that was something I could get over given the price. That being said, the build quality far exceeds my expectations. The steel is solid, the holes are drilled in the right places, the hardware doesn’t feel cheap, the pump doesn’t make weird noises and the INSTRUCTIONS were clear. Some other reviewers stated that the instructions were vague or not clear enough but I have never installed a lift before and my father and I got it completely set up, wired, and functional in less than a day.
When we finished the install the last step was to mount and wire the safety bar. This is the ONLY issue we ran into with the whole process. The instructions stated that there is a special bracket to mount the safety bar on and my kit seemed to be missing that bracket. We installed the lift on a Saturday, I messaged the support team on Sunday afternoon regarding the missing bracket and by Tuesday I had a response and the customer support staff listened to my problem, replied with a simple question and after showing them the hardware that was included in my kit, they sent me detailed pictures of the updated design (the instructions reflected the older design) and exactly how to install the safety bar with the hardware that was included in the kit. The support staff was extremely helpful and attentive to my problem and after looking at their photos I got the safety bar installed and operational in about 30 minutes.
From top to bottom the whole buying, delivering, installing and operating process was/is streamlined and EASY. You cannot beat the price, the build quality is solid, the instructions were good, the support was quick and helpful and I did I mention that I had the lift in my garage ready to install within 5 days of ordering it?
Seriously, if you’re on the fence about a lift, it’s one of the best investments you can make as a DIY’er and I foresee no problems in the future with this unit. Just make sure your concrete can handle it and that you have enough ceiling clearance. Now stop reading my review and just buy it before the price goes up!
Only exception is the installation instructions. Very poorly structured and will require some personal mechanical inclination to decipher.
All in all I have zero regrets with this purchase. It makes changing brakes, oil, etc., very enjoyable.
Highly recommend.
The Good: A very solid lift that is reasonably straight forward to install. Two post lifts are commercial/industrial products. If you're buying a two post lift the issues that others mention aren't even worth discussing. The lift handles my vehicles with ease and confidence. If you need customer service (I did) they are helpful and prompt.
The Bad: The shipping frame was missing bolts which I needed to replace so the freight company could get the lift to the back of the truck.
The Ugly: The motor shorted out on first use. The coil lead inside the motor housing was not secured properly and contacted the centrifuge switch. After determining that I wasn't an idiot (a fair test) they shipped a replacement that arrived with in three days. (GOOD!). You can avoid this problem by gently pulling the leads running into the motor from the junction box and put a tie wrap on them to avoid having the slack pushed back into the motor when you wire the limit switch and replace the relay block.
Snake Bit: I guess I'm unlucky because the hydraulic fluid dip tube on the replacement unit was broken. But since I had the unit with bad motor but good hydraulics I swapped in the good dip tube an viola! I was up and running.
Of course I would have preferred a problem free initial setup but the value here is killer and I am' grateful for the good customer service.
Update: after 3 years of regular use to maintain my cars and truck the lift is as solid as the day I installed it. The lift sees weekly use during race season to service and repair the race car. One bit of advice - install the lift with ease of loading and unloading in mind and not asthetics.
Can figure out how to install this lift
Instructions are not terrific though.
It has Really a blessing to my shop.
Working on the floor gets old.
Buying lifts in this prosumer category is often a sketchy proposition, like the scissor lifts you get from HF and others with questionable but usually adequate build quality. Not so with this. All of the welds look like they're wire feed gas welds done by a machine. If not, they're done by very good welders who know their stuff, so check that box.
Another indication of build quality is that when I set the posts up and dialed in the exact same number of turns to the cable adjusters on either side, the two sides were so perfectly aligned that I couldn't tell the difference between the clicks on both columns. They were clicking at exactly the same times, meaning that both columns, both cables and all of the pulleys were built to the exact same spec on either side. Otherwise my method of adjustment would have been merely a close place to start with before fine tuning. I didn't have to make any. Once they were tensioned, that's where they stayed. I find this to be an attention to detail that while maybe not necessary, it shows pride in workmanship that gives me confidence that I'll be safe working underneath.
A final word about quality is the fact that they require a 30 amp circuit and 6" minimum concrete thickness. The power unit draws only 15 amps, so the 30 amp circuit is way overkill. Same with the concrete. While others of the same capacity call for 4.5" thickness, they build in a greater safety factor with this lift by calling for 6". While this is on the installer to do it this way, it again gives me confidence that I'm not going to end up a pancake underneath this thing.
With all that said, when I had the truck up on the lift and started grabbing things at the rear, it seemed to move around quite a bit. Apparently this is normal for a long pickup and it can be remedied by putting safety stands front and rear. I couldn't bring myself to get under it until I bought the safety stands to stabilize it. All in all the truck was up in the air for two weeks and there was never any indication of strain. When it came time to let it down, no issue there either. It picked it up if the safety catches no problem and down it came after I released them.
As others have noted, the instructions aren't great. The limit switch and bar was a mystery that took a little while to figure out. There was no diagram or instruction on how to do it. Also, I don't think I would feel confident putting a full 10k lbs on it. That's not to say it won't lift it safely, but even given the safety factors they build into the capacities on these things, I always like to have more than I need to have when I have to climb under something that weighs several tons. With the way the safety arms were flexing with 7k+ on it, that's about all I'm comfortable with personally. It's fine considering that my pickup is the heaviest thing I'll ever put on it, but if you're looking to put a full 10k on a lift, you might want to get something that's the next class up. The 11k and up lifts are a much heavier duty design than this style and will give you the wiggle room needed in case your weights aren't exactly where you thought they were.
Overall, I consider this to be a bargain for the price. It's a very well made piece of equipment and costs thousands less than the name brand lifts. I've seen the other 10k lifts and they aren't any heavier than this in design. The instructions aren't the best, but given the price, I feel like that's the least of my concerns. I was still able to make do, so it wouldn't be worth paying extra to have the install manual flow a little better. In the end it works beautifully and I couldn't be happier.
Customer Service 5/5 stars.
6 month review, going strong. Almost daily use when I am home with zero issues. Only thing I have come across is Aplus does not have other accessories on their web site. I’m not sure if another brand name will work.
